For a truly unique experience flushed with historical significance, look no further than Monasterio Hotel in Cuzco. Sympathetically adapted from a 16th century monastery, this hotel is bursting with character. Built in 1595, the building became a base for Catholic priests and the original artwork from this period still adorns the walls. Huge, heavy wooden doors and courtyard gardens bordered by dozens of stone archways make for an unusual exterior while internally rooms are cosy and intimate, looking onto the central courtyard and the hotel’s most loyal resident – a three-hundred year old tree. At eleven thousand feet, oxygen pumps are a welcome in-room luxury, while the large roaring fireplace in the lobby accentuates the hotel’s homely appeal.

Luxury Hotel Experiences

The hotel provides the perfect base to embark on the acclaimed Inca Trail. The routes, many of which are of original Incan construction, integrate a network of three overlapping trails. You will pass through various Peruvian terrains including alpine forest, mountain-side and cloud covered landscapes before arriving at the magnificent Machu Picchu. En route, the presence of ancient civilisation such as Inca ruins, stone stairways, tunnels and rocky pathways can all be observed. However, due to erosion concerns, the number of tourists allowed to trek the route has been limited by the Peruvian government; only five-hundred people are permitted daily so early booking is necessary.

Cities

Cuzco, located in the southern highlands of Peru and 11,000 feet above sea level, is a richly historic city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Throughout its deeply fascinating past, Cuzco has been home to Incan civilisations and invading Spanish conquerors, both of which have left their mark. From ancient temples once lined with solid gold walls, to awesome cathedrals, Cuzco is flushed with historic significance. Marvel at the colonial works of art and detailed wood carvings dotted across the city squares and walk through charming cobblestone alleyways admiring impressive Spanish mansions. From here you can also start your adventure to Machu Picchu, criss-crossing your way through Incan ruins on the world-famous Inca Trail.
