As the most narcissistic hotel in Rio de Janeiro, Fasano flaunts its attributes with true Brazilian bravado. It’s hard not to be sucked into this superbly stylish hotel which boasts the trendiest pool-scene in Rio and has Ipanema Beach on the doorstep. Designed by Philippe Starck, rooms are effortlessly sleek, with a chic 1960s influence and perfectly positioned pieces of iconic furniture, such as the outrageous La Mama armchair by Gaetano Pesce, which has to be seen to be believed. And then there’s the sexy rooftop pool and bar where the rich and the famous schmooze over Cachaça cocktails and dips in the marbled infinity pool. When something looks this good, a suitably large ego is more than justifiable.

Cities

Literally step outdoors onto the boulevard off Ipanema Beach and find yourself on one of Rio de Janeiro’s most popular beaches. Alternatively, head towards the iconic Copacabana beach and hang out with Brazil’s most beautiful residents – here you will find over four kilometres of golden coastline, scores of sun-worshippers and scantily-clad beach bodies. Take respite in one of Rio’s funky café-bars and order chilled Caiprinhas before ascending Sugarloaf Mountain via the Sugarloaf aerial tramway, from here you can observe the whole bay of Rio, from its sparkling white sands to the glistening metal skyscrapers and beyond. Complete a busy day with a spot of Samba in one of the many Samba schools that freckle the city. Alternatively, take one last hike up Corcovado Mountain to see Christ the Redeemer. This colossal statue, made from concrete and soapstone is over thirty-eight metres high, weighs a hefty 635 tonnes and is considered one of the best examples of Brazilian Art-Deco in the city.
