Property Highlights:+
City Highlights

Discover Galle on foot. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is packed with Dutch-colonial architecture, grand mosques and churches, handsome residences and rambling museums. Tucked between the dozens of historical buildings are inviting cafés, spice-filled markets and antique-stuffed shops, not forgetting excellent jewellery stores in the Fort - Amangalla's guides will show you where. The Fort is, without doubt, Galle's star attraction, a walled enclave flanked by ocean on three sides. Don't miss the passeggiata on the ramparts, a ritual every dusk where locals gather and swap tales of the day.

Romance

Flaming torches, flickering candles and the burnt-orange rays of the sun sinking down to the horizon, verdant green rice paddies stretching into the distance. Share this magical scene with your loved one and enjoy a traditional roti dinner served in an outdoor pavilion. Another option is a romantic dinner by the pool, a menu of Sri Lankan delicacies created just for you. Fire dancing, flute recitals, glowing candles and twinkling stars all add to the mood - an enchanting evening for couples old and new.

Culture & History

Amangalla lies within the fort's four-hundred-year-old walls. Take a leisurely walk in the narrow streets lined with Dutch heritage houses and Government offices in varied states of repair and watch the daily life of the community unfold before you as bullock carts, food carts and bicycles jostle for space with pedestrians. Carry on from the Dutch Church, past the Governor's House, spice warehouses, Court Square, Kacheri (Town Hall) and the lighthouse, on to the sea wall and ramparts. Just a twenty-minute drive away from the fort are the Yatagala and Rhummasala temples. The 1,200-year-old Yatagala Temple, one of the oldest in the region, is set in a valley of rice paddies and jungle hills. Climb to the top of the 120 steps for some wonderful views. Situated on the headland across the bay from the fort, the Rhummasala is a relatively new temple, built by the Japanese.

Hotel Experiences

Join the chef on his daily visits to Galle's markets, piled high with goodies. The aromas of ginger, cumin, mustard seeds and other heady spices fill the air and the variety of fresh seafood is truly astounding, not to mention the line-up of plump fruit and vitamin-rich vegetables. Pick some of your favourites, throw in something new and then retreat to Amangalla's kitchen for a private cookery class. Lessons are also on offer out in the paddy fields, cooking under thatch with local clay pots.

Spa & Wellness

Recapturing the memories of a bygone era of "taking the waters", treatments at The Baths restore the body and soothe the mind. Five softly lit treatment chambers lead off a descending arched hallway, whilst andlelit recesses, tall ceilings and traditional archways feature in the hydrotherapy area, where there is a sauna, steam room and hydrotherapy pool with specifically placed jet massagers to stimulate the entire body. Daily yoga and meditation sessions are held in the Garden Pavilion.

Wildlife Encounters

Sri Lanka's southern tip is amazingly close to the deep waters of the continental shelf, a place where giant Blue Whales swim from December to April. Amangalla guests can join special whale-watching excursions and glimpse these huge, graceful creatures in the wild. Observing the world's largest marine mammal is an experience not-to-miss!

LUXURYBARED INDEPENDENT REVIEW

Amangalla

The Aman Hotel Group’s penchant for picking run-down properties of diamond standards in unfashionable spots, fixing them up and soliciting a strong and loyal following is unsurpassed in the industry – and that’s exactly what happened here in Galle. The New Oriental Hotel had an illustrious career as the grand dame of southern Sri Lanka, but it fell into disrepair, as so many dames do, and became a shadow of its former self...until Aman rode up and restored it within in an inch of its life to its former glory. And today, Amangalla is one of the most elegant addresses in the world. The attention-to-detail and history stands out in the décor, the service and the ambience. It has not succumbed to temptation to modernise and remains an exquisite, cultivated and immaculately dressed gentlemen’s gentleman, dedicated to the comfort of visitors. Travel back in time to an age of grace, where you can live in the tranquil heart of a still bustling and ancient fort city. From the outside, the colonial architecture, with its white walls and huge shutters is reminiscent of a French town hall. A lovely terrace with beautiful baked floor tiles adorns the entrance and walking up the steps to the hotel is like stepping back in time. The navy blue, cream and rattan of the atrium is too elegant for words, complemented by the smiles and pressed uniforms of the staff. Even in the hottest months, high ceilings and wafting fans offer a cool retreat. A slow staircase leads to most of the rooms on the lower floors, while others situated towards the rear of the building overlook the gardens. Being an Aman property, a huge pool is foremost in the layout of the land.
