A Novice's Guide To Luxury Yachting

By Nick Jackson

Travel Consultant

Posted: 27 October 2014

We asked: What can someone expect on their first luxury yachting holiday?
Nick said: Comfortable, stylish surroundings, usually with a host of luxuries − such as a hot tub − fantastic service, cuisine that wouldn’t be out of place in a five-star hotel and a knowledgeable crew that can tailor an itinerary with sailing stops and activities as you desire. Your day might start with breakfast on the deck, followed by a couple of hours of sailing to a secluded beach for a picnic lunch and a spot of snorkelling. Perhaps learn a few sailing skills or fish for your supper. In the evening, why not savour a cocktail in the lounge before dining al fresco or heading ashore to a restaurant? The choice is yours.

We asked: Is a luxury yacht holiday suitable for families?
Nick said: Children are welcome on most of the yachts we feature (although age restrictions may apply) and a yacht holiday offers fabulous opportunities for little ones and teenagers to try new activities such as snorkelling with their crew. Child-size life jackets can also be arranged.

We asked: Is there one destination in particular that you would recommend as a good place for the novice to start?
Nick said: The British Virgin Islands are perfect. There are lots of little islands, bays and coves to discover at a blissfully relaxed pace, plus livelier locations with bars and restaurants that are well-known on the yachting circuit. Some of my favourite yachts in this part of the world include Viking Dream, Zingara, Pacific Wave, and, if you really want to ‘push the boat out’ there’s Necker Belle.

We asked: How does someone set about choosing the best luxury yacht for their travel party?
Nick said: Our featured collection ranges from motor and sailing vessels, to catamarans and gulets, so your Travel Consultant will ask you about who you are travelling with, the sorts of things you like doing and where you’d like to go, then with the assistance of our yacht partners they will help to match you with a suitable boat and crew. Amongst my favourites are Jambalaya in St Lucia and Ombre Blu in Italy, and for something very special there’s the ultra luxurious Told U So By Molori in France. Once you’ve booked you will be asked to complete a preference sheet to detail things such as dietary requirements and your favourite beverages, to ensure you are well catered for on board.

We asked: What’s included and what’s not?
Nick said: Your yacht charter fee normally includes the services of your crew, breakfast, a standard bar and a daily fuel allowance. A charge of between 25% and 30% (called an Advance Provisioning Allowance), which must be paid before departure, is also made to ensure that the cost of additional meals taken on board, port fees and extra fuel, are covered during your cruise. Any money not used will be refunded to you and any overspend must be paid in local currency. Tipping is not included and is at your discretion.

We asked: What’s the dress code?
Nick said: There is no need to dress up on-board, not even for dinner if you don’t want to. Prepare to go barefoot or take some boat shoes with you, as in general, shoes (and definitely heels!) are not allowed on board.

We asked: Any final advice?
Nick said: I’d recommend taking soft luggage, rather than suitcases, as they are easier to move about on board and take up less room in your cabin.
